Global Trade as a Driver of Sustainable Development — With Accountability at the Centre

articleSimon Mak8/2/2026

At Ascent Partners Foundation , we recognize that global trade, when governed responsibly, has the potential to accelerate sustainable development across regions. Beyond the exchange of goods and services, global trade supports knowledge transfer, industrial upgrading, and inclusive economic growth. It also contributes meaningfully to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Responsible and well‑structured global trade directly advances:

  • SDG 1 – No Poverty, by creating market access and income opportunities in developing economies.
  • SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, by strengthening employment, productivity, and supply‑chain competitiveness.
  • SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, through enhanced investment flows, technology transfer, and capacity building.
  • SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities, by enabling SMEs, women‑led enterprises, and emerging markets to participate more fully in global value chains.
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, by fostering cross‑border collaboration and coordinated action.

However, it is equally important to recognize that global trade presents material sustainability challenges. Carbon‑intensive logistics, labour‑related risks, biodiversity impacts, and uneven distribution of economic gains remain structural issues that must be addressed. A sustainable trading system requires transparency, evidence‑based governance, and shared responsibility across all stakeholders.

Through my engagement with the United Nations ESCAP Sustainable Business Network (ESBN), I have seen the importance of supporting Asia‑Pacific economies in building responsible, resilient, and future‑oriented trade ecosystems. ESBN’s emphasis on inclusive growth, digital transformation, and ESG‑aligned business practices aligns closely with the mission of Ascent Partners Foundation.

Together with our partners, we are advancing efforts to strengthen responsible sourcing, increase supply‑chain transparency, incorporate climate and nature‑related considerations, and support organizations in achieving verifiable ESG‑compliant trading practices. Our commitment is to ensure that sustainability becomes a core operating principle for businesses participating in global markets.

Global trade can be a meaningful catalyst for the SDGs. To realize this potential, we must ensure that progress is accountable, measurable, and aligned with long‑term sustainability objectives.

Ascent Partners Foundation remains dedicated to promoting a global trading environment that supports people, strengthens economic resilience, and safeguards the natural systems upon which all economies depend.
